Understanding Eczema and its Impact

Eczema affects millions of people in the UK, causing more than itchiness. It interferes with sleep, work and confidence. As a dedicated Eczema Clinic, we focus on your root causes for lasting relief. Our holistic approach combines skin diagnostics with environmental assessments and education to stop ongoing cycles of eczema flares.

What Is Eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition which develops because of a defective skin barrier and excessive immune system activation. It has a typical pattern of symptoms: the skin becomes red and hot (known as inflammation) and the surface dry and scaly. When people refer to ‘eczema’ they often mean ‘atopic eczema’ (also known as atopic dermatitis). Atopic eczema is the most common form of eczema - but others exist so getting a diagnosis is important! Atopic eczema is a type of eczema that’s related to allergy. The condition typically begins during childhood but it can continue into adulthood or even first appear as an adult.

Common Symptoms and Triggers

Itching is the most common symptom experienced, with background skin becoming red and angry. Your skin is often dry and flaky in between flares. People can also get yellow-crusty, painful or weeping skin - which can be a sign of infection. Common triggers for eczema include allergens (things that are usually harmless but can overactivate the immune system, such as pollen or food), irritating chemicals (such as detergents in soap) or stress. Sometimes eczema can be caused by ingredients in creams or cosmetics, which is called a contact allergy. Identifying personal triggers is key to management.

How Eczema Affects Daily Life

Eczema can have a huge impact on people's lives. Uncontrolled eczema causes unbearable itching and sleepless nights. Over time this can lead to a low mood and depression. Children may face bullying and disrupted schooling. Adults may avoid social events. Long term scratching risks infection, thickened skin and scarring.

Why See a Dermatologist for Eczema?

Most people rely on eczema advice from friends, social media, their pharmacist or GP. They often get conflicting or misleading advice and end up using expensive over-the-counter treatments that don't work properly. Good eczema care needs a personalised approach and detailed education about how to use your treatments.

An eczema dermatologist in the UK has the knowledge and experience to provide an accurate diagnosis and personalised therapies. They can tell you which subtype of eczema you have and formulate a plan. Eczema dermatologists have access to more advanced treatments that cannot be found at your local pharmacy or GP surgery. They stay up to date with current research to offer the latest therapies.

Whilst GPs manage most cases of mild eczema, moderate-to-severe eczema needs consultant-level expertise to prevent long term impacts on your skin and psychological health.

Benefits of Seeing an Eczema Dermatologist

Specialists use clinical examination and targeted questions to identify your specific eczema subtype and associated conditions. Eczema syubtypes include atopic eczema , contact eczema, dyshidrotic eczema and asteatotic eczema. This approach allows precise and effective treatments. Eczema dermatologists can recommend investigations and prescribe targeted treatments, such as tablet based therapies. Continuous support from an eczema dermatologist helps you learn effective methods to manage and prevent eczema flares.

When to Consult an Eczema Specialist

Anyone with eczema can access a specialist through our clinic. Consider an appointment if you are still getting flares despite treatment from your GP or pharmacist. People with recurrent infections, lost of sleep or reduced school attendance should think about an appointment earlier.

What to Expect During Your Consultation

Your eczema specialist in the UK reviews your symptoms, asks detailed questions, examines your skin and discusses triggers. Other tests may follow, such as allergy testing if needed. You receive a clear, personalised skin care plan and education on how to manage flares.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A photo appointment, or teledermatology, is a form of consultation where photos are sent by the patient and a detailed, targeted questionnaire is sent about your skin condition. This is used across the NHS and private sector as an affordable and accessible way to access specialist Dermatology services.

No, for photo appointments you do not need a referral. We recommend that you give your GP contact details, so that they can be copied into any correspondence and updated with the plan. If you want to do a video or in person consultation and have private medical insurance, you may need a referral from your GP based on your insurance provider's policy.

There are other online dermatology services but most of these are general dermatology services and don't specialise in eczema. Some of our competitors use GPs to deliver eczema based consultations whereas our doctors are UK trained Dermatologists. We keep all our fees upfront and don't require any subscription from you.

Children can use this service under their own names, but we will require proof of identity and parental responsibility.

If we are unable to make a diagnosis we may recommend an in person appointment or skin biopsy. Fees are non refundable but you will be offered 20% off the clinic consultation for new in person appointment (self paying patients only, excludes medically insured patients).

You have to be a resident in the UK to use our services.

If needed, the Photo Appointment will include an electronic prescription.

The field of eczema is rapidly advancing and it's very exciting! At the moment we can't prescribe these treatments through a Photo Consultation but we can advise you how to access them and provide them through in person consultations if needed. Please note though that the current price of biologic treatments is very expensive in the private sector.
